French wine exporters say U.S. wine taxes a "sledgehammer" to the sector

The U.S. decision to impose additional tariffs on French wines and cognac, which come in addition to a first set of tariffs late last year, will cost the sector a total of over 1 billion euros ($1.23 billion), the French wine exporters’ federation said on Thursday.

The U.S. government on Wednesday said it would raise tariffs on certain European Union products, including wines from France, the latest twist in a 16-year battle over aircraft subsidies between Washington and Brussels.

The Great British Booze cruise to France ends with Brexit

FOR the better part of two decades, the French port city of Calais has enjoyed a steady stream of Brits making a quick stopover with one mission in mind: to stock up on wine and other alcohol at a steep discount and haul the goods back to the UK.

Wine warehouses such as Calais Wine Superstore, with the charm of an aircraft hangar but the attraction of prices much lower than back in the UK, welcomed British buyers who would arrive by car or ferry. People could bring back the equivalent of 120 bottles of wine for a single trip, and lower taxes as well as a strong pound prior to Brexit added to the savings.

“Worry engulfs wine industry as Winefest approaches”

Sherrie Hamilton, co-owner of the Red Fox Winery in Palisade, has faced difficulties as a business owner in the past. A vineyard freeze delayed the opening of Red Fox six years ago, but losing the Colorado Mountain Winefest, which spreads brand awareness and rakes in a good portion of revenue, would be more devastating.

The financial security of her winery and others could be in question if the annual event is canceled due to social distancing measures to reduce the impact of COVID-19.

“Critics drink their words as rosé on rocks sells”

Traditionalists were outraged 15 years ago when a group of French vineyards announced the launch of a rosé wine designed to be served with ice cubes.

Now Rosé Piscine, as it was named, is being hailed as one of the great modern success stories of a French wine industry in urgent need of renewal amid falling sales.

Marketing consultants say the triumph shows how the country’s deeply conservative winemakers will have to break taboos if they are to overcome the crisis caused by coronavirus.

“Coronavirus may cut wine sales in Europe by half, an industry body says”

The closure of bars and restaurants to contain the spread of coronavirus has slashed global wine sales, and winemakers’ revenues in Europe could be cut in half, the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) said on Thursday. While wine sales are likely to grow again once lockdowns are eased, the crisis could bring irreversible changes to the sector.

European producers, particularly in France, Italy, and Spain, have called for urgent help, with French winemakers penalized by US tariffs of 25 percent as part of Washington’s response to EU aircraft subsidies, as well as the lockdowns.

“1 billion liters of wine in Europe could disappear due to a lack of storage”

If you are a wine connoisseur, be ready for a tumultuous drinking future — the wine industry in Europe is in major crisis.

As per reports, one billion litres of wine made in Europe could disappear or would be dumped in the drains.

Wine manufacturers in France, Italy and Spain are the worst suffers of the situation.

The situation has arisen due to a lack of storage after the closure of bars, restaurants and shops across the continent, and a fall in exports, has led to a huge surplus.

French politician Eric Andrieu, who is also a member of the European Parliament, has called on the European Commission to immediately intervene.

“Hailstorm devastates hundreds of hectares of Bordeaux vines in SW France”

PARIS - A violent hailstorm that hit the Bordeaux wine region last Friday has caused severe damage, with several hundred hectares of vines nearly destroyed, notably in the famous Saint-Emilion region, the local chamber of agriculture said on Tuesday.

This comes at a time when French wine makers are already suffering from a slowdown in consumption due to the closure of restaurants and bars worldwide in a bid to contain the new coronavirus, as well as from lower exports caused by extra U.S. tariffs on French wine since late last year.

“It was the last thing we needed,” the chamber of agriculture of the Gironde region, which encompasses all Bordeaux vineyards, said in a statement.

PARIS — Wine consumption in the European Union is expected to fall this season due to the decision to close bars and restaurants to contain the coronavirus, with exports hit by extra U.S. tariffs, the EU's executive said on Monday.

The European Commission forecast wine consumption in the EU's 27 member states to fall to 108 million hectolitres, or 24 litres per capita, in the 2019/20 (August-July) season, a drop of 8% compared to the average of the last five years.

“European wine v covid-19: Problems and solutions”

Covid-19 has put the British – and global – hospitality industry on its knees, and in turn, has had a knock-on effect on the entire supply chain

Although online and retail wine sales have experienced a promising spike, winegrowers across Europe are flooded with unsold stock.

The pandemic is just the cherry on a sour cake that started baking in late 2019. It’s ingredients: Trump’s import tariffs (which hit mainly French wine), the trade deal between Australia and China (to the disadvantage of most European wine countries), and last but not least, the cancellation of all wine fairs, which has left large and small wineries begging for business.

The 2020 wine grape harvest may still be a long way ahead, but with their cellars full of unsold stock, European producers fear that the coronavirus crisis might have a serious long term impact on the viability of the entire industry.

“France moves on what “natural wine” is”

Natural wine has internationally become a significant subsector of wine in recent decades, maybe especially in Europe and Japan and among younger people. Its definition – or lack thereof – has been somewhat vexed: there is, I suppose, sufficiently broad agreement amongst the various bodies that organise the natural wine fairs that have become quite common; they can regulate producer admittance (largely on the basis of accepting a producer’s bona fides, I suspect). But there’s inevitably room for some dissembling from producers (arguably especially when larger commercial producers want to get involved), and for confusion amongst less well-informed drinkers.

”French Winemakers Keep Up the Fight”

With severe restrictions around movement and transport, many French wine producers are concerned about the immediate future.

Drinking together alone - Social distancing has also been implemented in the vineyard and cellar; seven permanent vineyard workers look after the domaine’s 24 hectares and, presently, there are never more than two people per plot. Bartheleme wants to introduce "video apéros'' so people can virtually enjoy a glass of wine together in this time of physical separation.

Meanwhile, in Champagne, Charles Philipponnat, the general director of the eponymous house, has faith that people will open bottles with their family or alone.

"In dire times, the French have always drunk a bit more; this will be no exception."

“Life in Paris Without Restaurants”

In a city synonymous with dining out & drinking, a new lockdown to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus is disrupting the restaurant industry - and threatening the social fabric.

Paris, much like New York, feels radically different without the bars, restaurants, & coffee shops that make it come alive. The brief, daily exchanges with bartenders and baristas are an integral part of the social fabric of our lives, and without them, the people of Paris feel incomplete. But if Parisians truly care about protecting their access to such pleasures, pleasures they consider their natural rights, then they must ready themselves for the inevitable fight to keep the industry from going under.
